With more snow, and some sunshine, forecast over the half term break, Scotland’s mountain snowsports areas are gearing up for great skiing and snowboarding. All five mountain resorts are currently operating, with 39 out of a possible 64 lifts running today, Thursday 11 February, across all ski areas. Lifts include chairlifts, button and T-bar lifts, a funicular, gondola and even a ‘magic carpet’ for real beginners!
“We expect half term to be one of the busiest periods of the winter,” commented Chair of Ski-Scotland Heather Negus. “Even so, if our skiers and snowboarders follow some simple tips, they can easily enjoy some great, hassle-free sliding. For example, to avoid queues plan ahead – reserve equipment and buy tickets online or just make sure you have cash available to benefit from the ‘cash-only’ fast-serve ticket windows. Book lessons as early as possible – some ski and snowboard schools already have only a few places left. Check conditions before leaving home and leave early to arrive early, or book accommodation locally. And wrap up warmly – the wind chill may be significant on some days of the holiday.”
Although this winter has brought some strange weather patterns to Scotland, there is good snow in the Highlands and a quick check of conditions on the recently-revamped official website www.ski-scotland.com/conditions or on Ski-Scotland’s Facebook page shows there have already been some wonderful, ‘bluebird’ days with sunshine, blue skies and fresh powder.
Scotland’s indoor real snow centre, Snow Factor at Braehead Glasgow and dry slopes around the country also offer some good sliding fun and are a great way to get started on skis or a snowboard.
